When I Woke Up - by Ryan Carlson, Blue Workshop

This morning, I heard a vibration on my dresser. I slowly awoke, hearing a bumbling sound. I didn’t know what it was at first, but it ended up being my cell phone alarm trying to wake me up for school. It was my six o’clock school alarm. I tried to ignore it, but the buzzing kept getting louder and louder! Two minutes later I’d had enough. I sluggishly reached out and tried to find the “OK” button on my phone to snooze the alarm without looking. I lay there, absolutely still. My eyes were halfway open. Blankets were draped over me. My mind lingered on my alarm going off. Two minutes passed, and still no alarm. I just lay there, looking like a two hundred year old man. Waiting. I didn’t even fall asleep. I just waited.  The fifth alarm rings and I finally got up.  I started to pace towards the kitchen, hearing nothing, absolutely nothing. Nothing but the high-pitched drone you hear when you hear nothing. Nothingbut silence.

  1. I like the way that you took an everyday this the we all do and explained it in an seventh grade level such as when you wrote "i lay there looking like a two hundred year old man".

  2. I could picture you sluggishly trying to find the OK button. I think you did an excellent job describing your morning routine. I especially like the line "Nothing but the high-pitched drone you hear when you hear nothing."

  3. Ryan,
"Sluggishly" is a perfect word to describe how you felt that morning getting up! I also loved the words "draped" and "lingered". They are all such strong words to help me picture what you are describing!
